Was it strictly search engine traffic? I would think their existing traffic has been going down too ever since they started the "in your face" ads ~2 years ago.

Even though this forum was primarily to support Digital Point products and tools, the only reason I added some non-support forums that interested me (SEO, Google, Programming, etc.) was because I was tired of how slow SEO Chat had become.

    He did... 4 times. heh

That is my concern also... there were just sooooooo many similar dumb threads popping up over and over and over... I hope that doesn't start to happen here now

I don't see the nofollow and rewriting of all URLs as things that will help with SE traffic.

I think I would have scaled back the "takes 35 seconds per page to load" ads they have running. That alone would probably drive their traffic up 20%.

Anyway, happy new forum hunting for all the SEO chatter's who are now homeless.

Wow...and they call me grumpy ;)

The reason for the exodus wasn't exactly the signatures, it was simply the last of an ever growing pile of straws.

DP needs to repost his comment earlier. *guess randfish's comment about a single voice not being heard has some merit* All the links on seochat were using the nofollow, not just sig links, but header and nav links too. That didn't make a whole lot of sense.

But its been almost a whole week without a thread about poop or getting Nintendo laid. Apparently its not *that* crowded :p

I still maintain that alienating your existing user base is no way to build up your traffic.

Yes it was predominately search engine traffic. They had duplicate content issues with vbulletin and multiple urls for different purposes displaying the same content. The "new" blood (people) rushing in is what replaced the few displaced users that didn't like the ads. So it was a win, win. You don't like it, go elsewhere. Now however...that strategy is not paying off as the long tail of the experienced users are finding better places to send there time and taking mass amounts of people with them.

They also did a lot of this: redirected www.devhardware.com/forums to forums.devhardware.com

Google seemed to plummel some subdomains with large amounts of content during the Jagger update. So I am thinking this most RECENT update was a response to the Jagger update, and things were really starting to decline.

I mean when you look at it though, I don't think I would be complaining. The investment of SEOchat has probably paid for itself many many times and produced a good profit with the ads. Yet, I think they are stuck on continual upward growth in numbers ($$$ and traffic) to keep things kosher.

Another problem was that they were not adding anything extra to the forums that keep people coming back. i.e. tools, useful articles, etc.. I mean yes of course they have all the other stuff like articles, internet tv, newsletters, massive mailing list, and so on. Plus the forum hacks which were mediocre at best. But who really in there right mind wants to wade through a bazillion ads to get to the good content. Not many. A girl that works for me, said she gave up reading articles on the website long time ago because they were so laden with ads that you could barely read the article!
