Me and my buddies always go shark fishing and catch sharks in a few feet of water. We have a blast cathcing fish as big as us. I'm honestly suprised there aren't alot more attack. Talking about hitting close to home. :( My prays are with the girl and her family.

Sorry to hear about the girl and my condolences to her family...
Curious though, why don't the authorities put up anti-shark nettings in the area?

This reads like the script from Jaws.

Unbelievable. Why would anyone take that chance? Don't they have polls in Florida any more?

<edit>LOL -- I actually meant "pools" not "polls" but I think they've closed polls in FL after the last two elections too...

I was surprised to read that there is such a low number of deaths from shark attacks in the US. The likelihood of getting killed while driving is a lot higher than by going into the water.

Which misses the point entirely. If you knew there was a sniper on some overpass, would you not at least think about taking a different route to work?

She probably had her period and got mistaken for a big injured fish.

I'm not joking nor making light of this, it's very common, most people are not educated in the do's and don'ts of the ocean. I spent my childhood in the ocean with my feet dangling off a surf board, learned a few things from the old men too along the way. Those fishermen along the beach are great story tellers and educators.

Very sorry to hear this sad news. Here in Myrtle Beach we don't have too many shark stories, even more - I don't know any. But we sure have people drown in the ocean. Just last week, when my friend form Phoenix was visiting me, we were on the beach and lifeguard suddenly switched flag to blue - he said 2 people drowned a few hours ago... As for the sharks, fishermen and serfers seeing them all the time and even catch pretty often from the local fishing pier. We have a local commercial that was about sea food restaurant where the owner was coming from the water and had fresh fish cought, the faniest and the scariest part about the commercial - shark on the background in the water that actually got into the commercial by exident for real. ..well, I'm not sweeming anywhere far from the shore that's for sure.

    >>There were 12 shark attacks on Florida beaches in 2004, down sharply from 30 in 2003. Experts credit the busy hurricane season in 2004 for the lower numbers.<<

sounds like fun, one shark attack each month....do the tourists know???

Hehe, let's not forget that we have people killed by Alligators.

Sad, but true. We had a 13 y/o taken in front of his friends by a 12 footer right down the road.

I have a 5 foot fence around my yard between us and the lake. We don't currenty have any gators, but they can arrive anytime. There are pleanty of bass and there are otters, gator food.

Is it just me or is this a little bit distasteful in a thread about a girl dying?

Talking about 'gators - I've seen one here in MB right on the side of the road once in the most busiest place with tourists... I guess a lot of tourists taking this kinda stuff as part of the attractions - you know, picture with the yellow python on their neck, hugging gator and swimming with sharks..

If you take a helicopter ride over Fort Lauderdale beach, you will never, ever go further than 10 feet in the ocean again

Sharks are predators and they do what they do. There was an attack in Vanuatu last week too. You have to take them seriously.

I thought sharks were known to be a big problem in Florida? Some colleagues went over a few years back to negotiate a big deal and they were really disappointed that in the area they visited you couldn't do more than paddle in the shallows because of the sharks.

I too feel for that girl and her family. However from my understanding she was way beyond the second sandbar. This is an area that sharks feed from at all times during the day.

There was a guy who jumped off his dock in South Florida to swim with his wife who was already in the water and jumped on a Bull Shark who attacked and killed him while his wife was in the water beside him. The shark never touched her.

When we visit our home in Florida it is amazing at the number of people that go swimming at night off the beach. This is the most dangerous time you can go when sharks are in close feeding, but when locals warm them they just ignore it and some of them become statistics.

This is the time of year that Bull Sharks are mating and they become very agressive, so you dont want to be to risky in the water this time of year in Florida.
