Should I remove my hack?

I recently wrote a little hack for PHPBB forums that replaces the popup message alert with a floating layer so that the alert dosnt get blocked by Google toolbar or microsoft service pack 2.

however I also submitted it to PHPBB forums hacks and it has had over 50 downloads so far, one of the conditions of the download was that people make a couple of posts on my forum, say thanks, yknow the usual.
However so far, no one has bothered, is it worth my time creating and submitting stuff for other people to take them without even saying thank you, its not a lot of work and I didnt expect most people to bother but I assumed some would, and it did take about half an hour to write, modify and submit in total, was I being an idealist, was I wasting my time, should I take it down and let them be damned?

 

I think you have to expect that if you put it out there, most people are going to take it and you'll never hear from them. You just have to decide how much or how little this upsets you.

 

Well it dosnt really upset me, but if everyone just take it and leaves, then I see no point in keeping it up, screw them if they wont at least say thank you.

 

Did you say thank you when you downloaded Adaware or SpyBot, no one ever does so you should not be offended.

Most folks never donate either when they should, now you will find rare souls that do both, but that is why they are rare souls.

 

Well, that's what most people are going to do. If that bothers you (which it obviously does) then you should take it down. It really comes down to whether or not you are giving it away freely or if your "strings" which are attached cause you undue upset when the conditions are not met.

 

I just got my first bit of feedback after 58 downloads so I think I will leave it up, Its just thought it would be higher than 2%, i was guessing 5-10%, just being optimistic I guess, aw well,

 

Re write your advert you need to beg more and appeal to the better nature of people.
eg.
1) as a thank you please come by our forum www.forum.com.uk and post a bit.

2) I am a struggling young webmaster, I have written this script, and it has taken me some time. Please show you care by coming by my forum, and thanking me by making one or two posts. Please restore my faith in human nature, and prove all the doubters wrong. Thank you!

I know which one I think would bring the most traffic.

 

Well ive modified the thread accordingly but still only about 2% signup, perhaps you would care to take a look and see where im going wrong.

 

I've a free tool, average of 1000 people uses every day. 2-3 times a month I receive emails, saying "thank you". This is human nature, everybody is busy, everybody is running around. You can't just email every single webmaster which you found helpful. I found digitalpoint forums through the coop advertising network. Did I send them an email saying "thank you" for this great tool? no, I didn't have time yet. Will I donate? Yes, as soon as I see some results.
So have fun, if you feel like, offer free scripts, if you need appreciation try selling them
