Ah, so you'll be personally banning smoking and cycling to work huh? That'll clean your lungs out :)

Imported Dark Ale? Now that sounds interesting - what you talking there, AC... British Newcastle Brown, some Belgian variety like Leffe...? The taste of ale is something to savour and helps one drink less... usually

Real Ale has been making a comeback in this country over the last few years, people are tiring of the mass-produced tastless concoctions and going back to traditional tastes and methods... as long as the "PubCos" don't buy up all our independants :D

Mind you, I fancy a smoke after all this talk of tobacco... know I shouldn't...

Yeah, I like to smoke also, but I do understand that it is going to kill me, I am a chain smoker, know all about the problem.

The Dark Beers do taste so good, I use to be able to drink 6 to 1 over clear cheap beer, but as you age you can not digest that thick stuff Lever.

You will find out when you hit 45 man ;) :) :p

you can age gracefully or you can age badly ... either way, you will age. I am getting seriously worried. I don't wanna be tore up when I get older. Right now everything is cool but I look at some ppl in my family and it scares me.
I don't think alcohol is bad unless you abuse it but smoking does mess you up in too many ways ... I would vote for a ban, no lie!

there are certain parts of San Diego where you are being treated like a criminal if you smoke, for example La Jolla. Last time I hung out there someone made a comment right after I lit up saying " you've got a lot of guts, smoking a cigarette in la Jolla ". my mom also trips telling me smoking is low class. I wanna make an argument but then I see things for what they are. The best thing is never even to try a cigarette. Watching old movies where the heroes drink and smoke didn't help when I grew up either.

I feel like a hypochrite cause I have a cigarette lit right now but seriously. .. smoking kills. Smoking sucks. Ban it!

Now Lever that beer research could be of value to you if you put up some pages along with the hemp pages we had discussed, I would think you could do well with your knowledge on both subjects. ;)

I did a little research today and found that prohibition laws seem to have the effect of increasing the usage of the prohibited substance (case in point, the Netherlands).

I also found some other neat tidbits..
The Emperor Wears No Clothes is probably the most informative book I've ever read on hemp. I highly recommend it!

The bottom line is that humans are weak, business men understand this substance abuse problem and exploit it to make maximum $$$$$$$$$$$

It is up to all of us to attempt to control ourselves somehow :p

When they gave monkeys in a cage an unlimited supply of crack, they smoked themselves to death.

What does that tell you about the substance abuse problem.

If the smokes are seen and within reach, the monkeys are going to smoke them, real simple...

Time of day has nothing to do with it. Actually just about any alcohol is good for you in moderation. 1-2 glasses of wine or beer is certainly not going to send you to your grave any quicker than not. Wine itself, or again, most any alcohol in moderation can certainly be good for you. Moderation is the key. Drinking with food is also best.

A good place to read up on the good about alcohol in moderation is here:
    http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/01/26/health/webmd/main669573.shtml

Ultimately your life style plays greatly into how good/bad alcohol is for you. If you abuse anything it will likely hurt you. Too much food is bad for you. Too much water can kill you. Of course no one is banning these things yet.

While a lot of other issues arose during prohibition in the US, overall consumption did drastically reduce, even for years after it was repealed.

a LONG time ago, alcohol used to have nutritional value, as it was one of the only ways clean liquids could be stored. (water got containimated easily).

Alcohol in moderation won't hurt you, but keeping it in moderation is the problem. An 8oz mixed drink is one serving, but oftentimes people are getting 2 or 3 at a time without realizing it. Anything over 3 drinks in an hour is considered binge drinking (at least by definition), although I don't consider it as such.

But if you get drunk, that means you are taking in more alcohol quicker then your body can handle it, and that will always hurt you physically.

All the hippies claim that Dupont was behind the outlawing of hemp because they wanted to sell plastic fiber as a replacement for hemp fiber  :p

Since when was hemp outlawed? Where do you live? We used it quite a bit making molds in college sculpture classes. Heck there is a store at one of the malls here that sells product made only of hemp.

Anyway, it is not like hemp is an illicit substance. I mean you would have to be a moron or desperate to try and smoke it.

I'm not sure I would want to grow it in my back yard. Besides, I have a hard enough time growing grass in my back yard with my enormous maple tree shading everything.

Anyway, you seemed indicate it was outlawed. You were not specific as to what was outlawed about it. So you can't grow it in your back yard. Whoopie... Who would want to? I just out right bought it.

For those that are interested, I use hemp to strengthing plaster molds. I used a acrylic latex type product typically used in Hollywood in a 6 to 8 layering process (painfully time consuming) to make a mold in PERFECT and EXACT detail of an object. From there I cover the entire cured latex ruber cast with layers of plaster and hemp. What the hemp does is acts as a binder or strengthing agent, much like laying rebar in concrete. Makes for a extremely strong mold.

The duplicates of the object are made from the ruber mold, but the plaster cast over it is what holds the delicate mold in place. Many artists use this for making bronze castings of a scupture model they have made. I typically just make plaster renditions as I cannot afford the bronze.

It is kinda funny when people new to this process see those huge boxes of hemp opened up. The look on some of their faces.

God I miss doing that stuff. The internet has taken over my creative life.
