    I've used smarty, and I like it. I've also created my own simpler templating system for some applications. PhpBB?? I think you've mistaken forum software for a templating system.

    no phpBB has its own a template engine. I use a slightly modified version of that on my projects. If you have a copy of phpBB look at the template.php file.
