Sitting Is Bad | Stand Up!

With more and more people working at their computers the amount of health related "side effects" from constantly sitting are becoming more and more apparent. Sitting is being said to be the "New Smoking". Many new studies are being done and the evidence is conclusive, sitting is doing nothing good for you if done on a daily basis for long periods (more than a few hours at a time).

I am guilty of this, it is just so easy to spend 4-5 or more hours absorbed in something. Up until 6 months ago I have always done physical labor jobs. Now I own a Webhosting company and so i spend much time in the chair. I have noticed a profound effect on myself after only 6 months.

    - Headaches and sore neck
    - teeth clenching resulting in the above and other soreness in jaw
    - Lack of energy
    - Sore back

I knew I had to change things up, so what i have done is built myself a standing desk so i can use the computer while standing with proper posture. This has made a massive difference and I just wanted to share it. I feel better and thus I am more motivated and productive.

    So standup and feel better!

I recently saw an advertisement for an adjustable desk that can be used at sitting level with a chair and then quickly raised for when you feel like standing at it, instead. I tend to sit for a while and then get up, make a cup of tea, visit a co-worker, etc., as breaks from sitting and working. I would probably prefer to not stand at my desk for any length of time, but I am a dinosaur when it comes to office work, I suppose.

My daughter is almost finished with Pharmacy school and has been working different Pharmacist jobs as part of her final training. She does not like working in retail drugstores because they all insist that the pharmacists work on their feet all day (no chairs in the Pharmacy area) and she hates it. She gets to sit down part of the time in a hospital and other such pharmacy settings.

Like many here I spend a lot of time sitting while online. To compensate I have an exercise bike in my office. Whenever I have a break I get on it and ride away to music. I feel better after and any stiffness in my neck and back disappear.
Standing is not an option for me as this would produce sore feet, so not an idea that I would entertain.

To solve the sitting pain problem I bought a desk from IKEA, you can easily change the height:
    Max. height: 122 cm and
Is a good investment and if you serious about working from home I recommend it for everyone.

The video above is an IKEA sit stand desk that's about $250 I think. The orange one below that is called AltWork and costs about $4000 I believe. I really want Altwork but can't justify the price.

That looks good BUT check the guys neck as he tries to lean forward, that's a hell of a strain on his neck muscles and he'd find that hard to sustain. Not practical if you have to refer to papers, write notes etc.

It was pointed out to me recently that posture is everything. If you're a slouch sitting, you will be a slouch standing. The benefit comes from being mindful of what constitutes good posture and putting it in place.

That's the only thing I didn't like. I thought maybe that headrest can be bent forward.

Or maybe this kind of invention:

Neck should be safe now, and you're in horizontal position :)

You know I tried something similar. After about 30 minutes your arms are going to go numb since the blood circulation is reduced. At least it did for me. Didn't like it at all.

Sitting is bad and standing up will make your feet and back hurt a lot. Is there a decision? I guess not. I'll stick with sitting.

Yes, you're right. I forgot about exercising. In that case, if you train properly sitting wouldn't be a problem.

Why stand if you can sit?
And why sit if you can lie down?

I would suggest you to use sit-stand desk.[IMG]
You can work while sitting and as well as by standing. This will help you to improve your back positioning and relief pain.
I will also suggest for daily exercise and yoga for extra physical fitness.
