Out of phpbb, SMF and Mybb i'd choose phpbb.
Do you know how it was hacked? was it defaced that you are calling hacked?
Maybe you did not have the latest updated version for phpbb.

Well that seems a big loss. Did you not have a backup?
From my experience, one major thing that allows these types of hacks are phpbb mods are are developped by third parties.. Most of the time we dont even know what security holes they open up for the world.

If you use a clean install without any beta mods, then PHPbb is most likely to be secure enough to hold agaist hackers.

however if you want good features and you really want to stay from hackers, i guess you should invest in a Vbulletin Licence.

There is a post with over 50 responses...[sorry I don't have the thread], but smf seems to be the majority leader.

I'd go with mybb or phpbb. I currently use Mybb and, as long as you are using the latest version, you should be secure. Just make sure you don't show your version number on the site.

Either mybb or smf will do the job. But stay far, far, far away from phpbb - its hacker bait and has been that way for years.

The mybb developers paid for an independent security audit of the software. There were a couple of problems found, but they were fixed right away.

smf has been around long enough to be a secure and seasoned forum solution.
