SMF vs phpBB

I'm trying to decide whether to go with Simple Machines or phpBB for a forum. In general, what are your opinions on which one is better? I know vBulletin is better but I'm just not willing to shell out the cash for it.

I think in the past SMF would be the favorite, however I ask this question in light of the recent release of phpBB 3, which is in RC5 stage right now and the stable version should be released pretty soon. It looks like it has become much more advanced, but even so I think SMF might still be better.

are you guys considering phpBB3? I don't think there's any doubt SMF is better than phpBB2, but 3 seems like its made some great improvements.

That means your config file has a problem. Check with your database. BTW You should wait for SMF 2.0.

It should be nice to see SMF 2.0 lined up with phpBB 3.0

Yeah but SMF 2.0 won't come out for a few months and least and phpBB 3 could come out any day now. I need to make my site go live very soon. So right now it's a choice between SMF 1.1.3 and phpBB 3.

in SMF 1.1.3 and phpBB 3 I would say phpBB 3. You can always make a switch to SMF 2.0 later.

I think SMF loads faster. Also, you can't beat the SEO friendly links.

If you are talking of SEO4SMF mod, its still not good. Last time I checked, it messes up too much on SMF. phpBB has still beter SEO mods.

Could you please list the ones you know? I haven't been in touch with phpBB for awhile.
