SMS Sender

Can any one tell me how SMS sender scripts actually work?

Is it possibly to have a script that is FREE to send and recieve texts?

I have bought an sms sender script (in PHP) and it seems to be a very simple script, and sends texts for free. However I can't test it out because I'm in the UK and it only sends texts to US cells!

However, after seeing a few posts it seems that maybe it costs the reciever of the text rather than the sender - is this likely?

    Thanks,
    Michael

P.S. I need some one to test the script, PM me for the URL.

I think the thing to remember with SMS sending from the web is that it isn't just about the script. You need access to a carrier so that you can actually transmit your messages.

At some point your message has to jump from the internet to a telecom network in order for your message to be delivered. Unless the place you bought this script has access to a gateway, you will need to open an account with one.

I've never heard of a telecoms company allowing free use of its network though.Someone has to pay for the messages sent.

If you want to post the code to your script I'll take a look at it.

    :)

    I'm with ideas_man - there's no way it's free

either they're harvesting the numbers as they go so they can spam them or you've unwittingly hooked in for a demo period, or worse, you're accessing someone elses account.

some plans are cheaper than others but I'd be keen to see one that was free!

Yes, it works because it sends an email to the service provider (xxxxxxxxxx@mobile.cingular.com for example) and the carrier sends it to the user.

    really? Wow!

So Tony - you only cover the US? Any plans to extend down to New Zealand? It's phenomenally expensive down here.

Without giving too much of the game away, but how do you manage to do that and how does your company benefit from offering the service?

    Tony,

How much does it cost you to send sms? Does it vary between networks?

Just checked and your site seems to have all the features my site has. It is still lacking a few though. Good Luck.
On a different note would you mind pm'ing on as to how you will recieve the texts. All i know is as of the moment you can only do that using the networks officially, and paying for it...
