So Jealous, my son has a dream job!

He's just landed a part time job (perfect for a student) at an electronics store.

Yesterday a guy brought in his jetpack - he'd landed in the sea and some parts had shorted - amazing the whole thing wasn't a write-off. So nerdy wee boy with his "Trainee" badge on took charge and found the guy the bits he needed.

    How cool would that be!

    That's quite impressive indeed.

I know you don't like that word, as that is what your parents called you just before you moved out at age 35.

You seem like one of those girls on dating sites that requires the guy to have a good sense of humor because you're not funny yourself. Please entertain me because I'm boring as hell :)

lol, my kids are a nerd and a cheerleader. I'll take the nerd any day.

Was with a group of Ingress players before an Op and one said that another player (opposition) was "a bit strange". I looked around the group and replied "because we're all so normal". Nerd is not always an insult.

Reminds me of the quote: "Do a job that you love and you will never work a day in your life."

That's been my main advice to my kids with the caveat that they better be prepared to be happy with the income that said job offers.

and keep an eye on the future because all jobs will change and you need to be ready for it.

Talked to an aircraft engineer last week whose job is under threat because it's cheaper to fly the planes to Singapore for servicing than down the country. It's not just the kids in video shops. There are no guarantees.

Even my daughter, the phd in Pharmacy, has to worry about changes in the healthcare economy in the future. Though the impending demise of Obamacare is good news for her right now.

I mentor a lot of sales and marketing people and one of the standard pieces of advice that I give them is that the first day of your new job should also be the first day of your new job search. There is no loyalty or security in business these days and employees need to be as conscious of this fact as employers are. And I say this as someone with a foot in both worlds: I am both an employee and an employer (I need to get a life, of course.)

If you live in a fairly functional western democracy, one of the safest places to work is in government. Job security, rarely ever is there reason for dismissal (apart from misconduct), and very rarely is there any significant changes in job description or requirements.
