Start by creating a Facebook group and get all of your friends to share it

 

Not only Facebook. Twitter, Google, LinkedIn, G+ - whatever you prefer, the more the better. Read popular blogs, participate in discussions, post meaningful and useful comments, gain respect amongst the members of the communities you participate...

It takes time but it is a time well spent.

 

Try to offer something useful and free - content, service, hot deals, etc.

 

Get out there and network with others. Like their posts. Invite them to follow you. Contribute to their pages, etc.

You really have to figure out who your demographic is first. That will help you figure out which platforms are most important to set up and pay attention to. Facebook is the second most visited site on the web, so that is obviously an important one, but Instigram users are 70% woman, so if your business is geared towards a male audience, in may not be that important. After you define the demographic and set up the necessary profiles, start to post and connect with people CONSISTENTLY. Try to make sure that all your posts are not specific to your business though. People stop paying attention when everything is about your product/service. Sometimes a simple "Good Morning from ..." is all you need. Hope this helps.

Try to find people in the same niche and look for the social media networks your competitors are focusing. Don't go for all social networks and places because it will cost you time,money and efforts and in internet time you know TIME is money so be selective. Go for a small research and find what your competitors are doing e.g if they are selling lipsticks then you should know on which social networks they often publish their promotions and how. Hope it will help you.

 

From my experience I'd suggest you to take Google+ very seriously. It can make a lot of difference on your Google ranking.
Moreover, don't just follow others and get followed by others but connect with people, pages, groups from your niche, doing it randomly won't help much. Help people on social networking sites. And don't forget to link your business website (if you have any) from these sites.

Well if you got no money then it all depends how far to the dark side you are willing to go There are many methods that probably your competition is using, but they are not exactly whitehat and i doub't they can be talked in this medium.
