The software that's used to run Livejournal is available as open source/free software - see http://www.livejournal.com/code/. Many other sites use this code - see Wikipedia's list, It's in perl, which may or may not be a positive for you.

I recall thousands of Phpizabi sites being hacked in 2006 and 2007.
    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=phpizabi+hacked&btnG=Search

I don't know if they fixed all that up since then.

What kind of a social network are you planning to start?
I consider myself very knowledgable in this matter, I may be able to give some pointers to you.

    sima4999, man...

It seems like you bumped up several social network related threads from way back in time...
I should have checked the date of the OP myself too, I guess.

Peter must have gone a long ways already... (hopefully :)

Yes it is not extremely cheap, but contains such a holy bulk of features like 3D City that if we count the price of each the whole script made from the scratch would cost more than $80,000 (well this I counted myself, maybe you will have some different results). Just mere comparing AbleDating with the other scripts will tell you everything, there is nothing to be added to it. It is like an abyss between AbleDating and all-the-rest.

I personally prefer AbleDating because I need each time a new unique design, and I haven't seen any company online making such good and very different designs. I have more than 10 sites now running on their products, and also on emeeting, although emeeting is much simpler, but I use it for the sites that should be simpler. As for the wazzum software, whose owner so eagerly pours dirt on abk, it is a mere wordpress illegal clone, which can be seen reading the reviews http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&newwindow=1&q=wazzum+reviews&btnG=Search
It is not so bad in itself, but it still can not be called software, too raw.

I use Boonex Dolphin and it's worked well for my sites. It still has a few bugs but for the most part it works well if you know where to look and fix. I've used other apps and this is the one that works for my clients.

Drupal is free and great. You might have a learning curve though.
Download drupal and some free drupal themes and get a few modules then your set.

    Hi,

I am also looking for a bit of a social networking site but free if possible.

I run a new internet radio station and want people to get more involved on the website and thought a myspace/facebook style site would be great.

I have nearly 1,000 bands lined up to use the site already and 300 signed up to my current joomla website. I think the Dolphin one looks great for my needs but a few people have told me there are a few bugs and that has been confirmed here by jtadeo. I know basics with html and know what I am doing with a joomla but scripting is way over my head. Do you think I should look elsewhere or try out the Dolphin software?

    Jason.

Well EVRYONE start with Dolphin, it is like a tradition :D And then move to something better like Mixer or Emeeting. But as a start yes, you can start with Dolphin. It is like a first cheap car.
