    I'm on an email technical list and one of the discussions recommended using span. Another member came back saying ...

    This was news to me - and span is awfully useful when using CSS properly.

    How true is it?

    I've never had a problem with a div or a span causing any SE problems.

    I don't know about the navigation issue, but I have text within a <Span> which is indexed in Google.

    I use span a lot and have never seen a problem arise from its use.

    I use <span> quite a bit and I've never had a problem with content/pages not being spidered either. :)

    saying span gets blocked is like saying div gets blocked. nonsense.

    i even have text inside of span tags where the objects inside are hidden until the menu gets expanded via javascript.

    matter of fact... use CSS to it's fullest and the engines like your conent more! especially the new MSN.

    What a load of rubbish.

    Of course <span> works.

    I doubt the W3C would reccomend using it otherwise.

    <span> is a normal standard TAG so why spider should not look at it?

    LOL! Some websites should use it instead of the <html> tags... Something like:

    <spam>
    <spam head>
    <spam title>KEYWORD KEYWORD KEYWORD</spam title>
    </spam head>
    <spam body>
    This is a website about spam spammy keywords to generate AdSense ads.
    Keyword, keyword, keyword, keyword, keyword.
    Keyword, keyword, keyword, keyword, keyword.
    <adsense>ADS</adsense>
    </spam body>
    </spam>
    Code (markup):
    Ok, I know, I don't have nothing better to do...

    Back to the topic... It does not block spiders, it's just HTML, pure and simple.

    My forum is full of <span> tags, both around text and links, and google have indexed around 30,000 pages from it, so googlebot have no problems at all with <span>.. :)
