Spears caught driving with her baby on her lap

Caught with her baby on her lap as she drove her SUV, pop princess Britney Spears claims she was only trying to protect him from a "frightful encounter" with paparazzi.

In the photos, which appeared on a popular blog website, Spears is seen driving in traffic on the Pacific Coast Highway while holding her five-month-old son Sean Preston with one arm.

A bodyguard can be seen talking on the phone.

Spears fired back at those who
criticized her parenting skills, saying in a statement to People Magazine that after her run-in with the prying reporters, she "instinctively took measures" to keep her baby safe.

"Because of a recent incident when I was trapped in my car without my baby by a throng of paparazzi, I was terrified that this time the physically aggressive paparazzi would put both me and my baby in danger," said Spears.

"I instinctively took measures to get my baby and me out of harm's way, but the paparazzi continued to stalk us, and took photos of us which were sold to the media.

"I love my child and would do anything to protect him."

People reported Spears had been waiting for the bodyguard, who had gone inside a Starbucks, when she took her son out of his car seat in the back and held him on her lap.

When photographers aggressively approached the vehicle, Spears became upset and drove away as soon as the bodyguard was back inside.

The pop diva, who broke into popular consciousness with 2000's "Oops, I Did It Again," has not released an album in more than a year. These days, her family life garners more attention than her music career.

Her chain-smoking husband and Sean's father, dancer Kevin Federline, released his first pop-rap single, "PopoZao" in January, to less than critical acclaim.

Billboard called it a "monument to mediocrity," and Internet users worldwide have delighted at harpooning Federline's rapping skills, which fill less than a minute of the song.

In October, Spears' publicists said pictures of the pop star and her son had been stolen. The photos were later published on the Internet, then removed when she threatened to take the website owners to court.

I know she has put on a bit of weight but she hardly has more then one lap...a few chins maybe but still only one lap

 

As a person with a 6 month old ...it was very surprising to see her driving with the baby in her lap. I don't think she even had a seat belt on. No matter what - she should have put the baby in the carseat before she took off. A few pics won't hurt anyone.

That being said...I don't think she meant any harm. I think back to that age and you just don't realize how dangerous certain situations are.

 

Britney's son would be a good driver someday!

 

She might be so confused that time but still driving with a child on your lap is crazy.

i read it was because she was scared of the paparzzi and that it was an attempt to protect the baby.

Another celebrity with no brains. Why didn't Britney just hire a chaffeur to drive her and her child around? Common sense isn't so common any more, even around the wealthy.

 

Why doesn't she just've put the baby in the back and tint the windows...?

My parents waited until I was at least 5 before they let me steer the car.

 

She sucks.. not a good idea not to get a baby car seat...

 

nah...she couldve put the baby in a more safer place.besides, what if she suddenly crashes....right?
