So I forgot it was FA Cup final day and legged it to the nearest pub to watch at least the second half. On my own since I had no time to figure out where my mates went. I meant to get some work done so instead of a fresh pint I thought I'd better stick to coke.

About ten minutes after I had finished it (I ordered a bottle as opposed to the cheap instant shite) and 35 minutes into the time I spent there the owner of the place ask me what I want to order. I say 'nothing, thanks'. I expected to be left alone to quietly continue watching the football match.

    Boy was I wrong!

The guy gives me a lecture on how much he spends on TV licences a month and what not. Then he threatens me...

'Order again or leave my pub!'.

I wasn't aware of any minimum orders or time limits so I'm rather gobsmacked. I did intend to order again but not right now since downing a couple of glasses of cokes in a row isn't my idea of 'a nice drink'. So I said I'll order in five minutes. Not good enough apparently and this guy means it. I had to order or leave.

Now I could have given him a lecture back on friendlyness, attitude and what not but I just wanted to watch the match so I did order again and made sure it was the cheapest of cheap stuff I could get my hands on.

So... Am I a slow drinker/tight ass/out of order or is that guy an asshole in your opinion?

Needless to say, I won't be going there again... (Saucy Kettle in Surbiton)

They do the same at bars where the ladies dance, if you don't buy drinks and tip they ask you to get out.

They also do that at smoke houses in da hood and also at other kinds of houses.

There is a small chance I see these things wrong, not being a frequent pub goer so yes I am interested. I know one should order and not bring a crate of beer and crisps from Sainsbury's and go watch footy there but maybe there is a rule of thumb about this kind of stuff...

Maybe I should be charging the 2000 unique visitors of my site who don't buy a fee 'because I spend money on hosting'. Or I can put a timer on my sites saying 'you have 5 minutes left to order or your IP is banned from ever coming back'.

I could be rich in no time forcing people to buy!

In that business TOPS there are sales per hour figures that must be made, if you are in a seat that produces sales and there is not much coming from it the manager tends to get pissed off.

Same with camping out after a meal, they want to clean the table because there are folks standing in line outside

Forget it, the guy is a bad businessman. Full stop, one day you drink a coke, another you have 13 pints + 14 sambucas with all your friends. His loss.

True I can see that but this pub was half empty. Plenty of stools left. By kicking me out he would have kicked oyt 5% of his business at that time.

My idea as well. I'm far from a tight ass when going out. I might not go often but when I go I spend at least 60 quid.

Well that is a bad businessman, bad decision, when you have empty seats you should leave folks to enjoy the photos on the wall or what ever, as long as they take a bath once a week or so......

If it wasn't for the match being on I would have enjoyed an argument with this asshole and walked out making sure the other guest knew what this prick's idea of business was.

Stab the owner, that's really probably the best thing to do. Then burn down his pub.

Better yet, open a pub across the street from him and put him out of business if you want to take the passive aggressive approach. :)

For the sake of the cost of another glass of whatever, you´ll never go back to the Saucy Kettle and neither will a 1000 DP´ers. Nothing worse than a miserable landlord

That cheers me up thanks. :D

I doubt he has trademarked his pub name so perhaps I could indeed buy a pub next door and name it the same and then just to annoy him sell everything for free.
