    Yeah I think you would need patterns for that, to make them, on a blank image, draw the pattern you want, on a transparent background, then go to edit>define pattern, then on the image you want to apply it to, go to the blending options and pattern overlay, mess about with the settings a bit there.

    you can make horizontal stripes on a layer and then just select all and rotate 45 degrees
