I definitely agree...but if that kid knows not to use the words he/she reads in these forums, then a few swear words here and there aren't gonna change that fact.

And personally, I don't think I've ever met anyone who hasn't sworn in their lifetime.

Eeck 5 pages long. Only read the first post.

I think swearing is common and looks/sounds disgusting. Although, I do swear myself if I get a little ratty. Other than that I think that if a Girl/women swears it's kind of yukky and yobbish.

As a christian I prefer people not to swear but I'm not here to judge the World and I wouldn't explicitly tell people in passing to stop swearing as it is none of my business how they express themselves to other people. On the other hand, the respect I have for people who know me and still swear is greatly lowered as they know it offends me but still carry on doing it.

As far as swearing on forums is concerned, I think that you shouldn't do it. It lowers the quality of the forums, it could offend people and as a professional resource site the professionalism is lost a little. Forums are public places therefor if you can't show it on TV you should leave it out of the forum. (How about a watershed filter lol)

One day when my brother was around the age of 2, he bumped his head and said uck...which gradually turned into the word f*ck for some bizarre reason.

When he got told off or people tried to casually get him never to say that word again..he figured out that it was obviously a bad word if people were making such a big deal out of it.

From then on, anywhere we were...playgroup...supermarket...another childs house, at funerals, weddings... and something didn't go his way he would say 'FUCK!!!!!!!!'' He even taught me that word and I'm older than him.

    True story, kids.

Young Man, many of us awake to find our spouses a-gnawing. Even more of us go to sleep that way too.

    It could be worse.

Just think yourself lucky you don't live next door to some car wheel squealing, gazebo-rotting sociopaths like I do.

My big issue with swearing will come next week, when, after working at home alone for the past 18 months, I start a new job in an establishment employing four rather demure women, and a guy I've never met. My first priority is going to be how to discretely sound-proof the walls of my office.

Swearing on the internet has the singular drawback that posts get indexed and cached; and what seemed expressive at the time, can look very embarassing a few weeks later. Trust me.

Is that true? She has punched me in the face while sleeping and even clawed me a few times. But eating my hand?! C'mon! :p

Good luck w/ that! But why do you need to sound-proof the walls?

It's also (in Canada anyway) a chocolate confection, a bit like a cluster of Turtles, IIRC.

Balderdash, on the other hand, is a track and field event for the over-40 male crowd. The equivalent for women is known as the sag-race.

I just spotted this thread and this of course is one of my favourite subjects. So here goes some ideas in no particular order:

    1. I find it strange that Christians are offended by common swear words. From a biblical sense the only commandment I know of is "thou shall not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain". The bible itself uses words like "piss" that probably would offend our Christian brothers.

    2. Leading on from the biblical use of some of these words, the fact is that what we now think of as offense "swear words" are in many cases simply old Anglo Saxon words for the act or function. There is no moral imperative or biblical injunction against there use. So all the pretense of being offended is unfounded and artificial.

    3. There are some ocassions when the simplest and easiest way to convey an emotion is simply to swear. Now this shouldn't be over done. And yes if we really worked at it it might be possible to express that sentiment in other words. But part of an emotion is often the spontaneousness of the reaction and nothing is more spontaneous that a well expressed epithet.

    4. Now as to protecting children from this language. Anyone who thinks that children are innocent in these matters is living with their head in sand. I went through a period in my life when I was very deeply involved in the evangelical christian church. In fact I was the Sunday School Superintendent of a Fellowship Baptist Church here in Canada.

One Sunday morning the teacher of the 3 to 4 year old Sunday School class didn't show up and I had to teach the class. One of the 3 or 4 years was the child of friend of mine. And another child's name in the class was Wayne. Part way through the class the child of my friend interrupted the class with this announcement.

He said in his little squeaky voice "Booob, Wayne just told me to fuck off". Ever since that seminal event I have never worried about children hearing or reading swear words, even the infamous "F" word. I think that anyone who thinks that a child has never heard these words before is either naive, or ill informed.

So swear away, if that is what it is. It will only offend me when it is completely gratuitous and unnecessary to make one's point. But if it brings emphasize and clarity to the communication then I'm all for it.

I really don't see how the item you quote from me is "blaming" anybody. There is no blame associated with that statement. It is simply my understanding of the bibles relation to what is commonly called swearing and which offends some people from a Christian perpective as was mentioned earlier in this thread.

Had the ealier poster simply said "I'm offended by swearing" then I would have been cool with that. But he said "as a Christian I'm offended.." I am simply looking for the a biblical source for his taking offense and I don't know of one. But the implication from a statement like his is that swearing is a sin or a violation of Christian dogma. I'd like someone to show me where the bible defines and condemns swearing?

I write a serious post and all you can do is mock me. The bible does say something about not casting your pearls before swine. I may have to reconsidered that advice.

Some things fail to amuse me and this comment is one of them
