The Application You Can't Live Without...

    OK. Here's the scenario:

You are going to be sent to a desert island with only your solar-powered lap-top and high-speed internet connection for company, so what would be the one *free* application you would want to be allowed to use (apart from the browser, email program and instant messenger of your choice)?

The reason I am asking this is that there are just so many new, cool technologies and applications that are available now, with new ones appearing every day. But who has time to check them all out? And even if you did, you would only use a few of these more than a couple of times. Those are the applications I am interested in.

(Please be specific: So, for example, not just "RSS Reader" but which RSS reader and why, with a link to where it can be downloaded as well, if possible.)

For me, it would be the Google Desktop Search v.2.0. I have the ToDo list, System Monitor, QuickView and Web Clips running on mine and use it multiple times per day.

I think this could be a very useful thread to introduce cool and genuinely useful (not just flash-in-the pan) technologies to each other.

    Now, over to you....

mystikmedia - AI RoboForm does seem like a cool app, but could you tell us why this app is so great for you and leave a link for anyone who comes to this thread in the future to see it quickly, too?

Definetly AIM, or some kind of telephone service through the computer. So I could communicate, and maybe even order stuff to be shipped to the island on the business' payroll :):):):)

IamNed - I don't think Yahoo counts as an application. It is accessible as a regular website through the browser.

The web site for AI RoboForm is www.roboform.com. It's (as far as I know) the best form filling product on the market. It completes all personal information fields, stores logins for sites, etc...and I really like the way it works. I rely on a couple of other programs heavily, but that would probably be very high on the list.

Well in the case you described it will have to be an application that allows communication with the 'outside' world such as msn or yahoo messenger or maybe mirc :)

Hi Maro - I was thinking more of cool applications that exist now that some of us use and that others would be really interested to hear about. I had never heard of Trillian or AI Roboform, but these are the really useful cool apps I was hoping to elicit from fellow DPers by posting this thread.

The desert island concept was only intended to encourage you to whittle it down to one app.

:D I like to work in the night time so solar energy only wouldn't be my choice at first. It also depends on time difference with your contacts.

Seriously, I do most things remotely through the browser interface anyways. I can't think of anything beyond the usual suite of apps that I actually use day to day.

Well having visual studio.net full with msdn will be enough :) You can then start building anything you want...
Other than that I really like Servant Salamander and I am now so much dependant on it

True. Visual Studio would have to be above AI RoboForm on my list too. I just thought he was looking more for software that he might not already know about.

Ava Find - Ava Find lets you find any file located on your computer instantly.
Desktop Sidebar - Windows Vista (Longhorn) style sidebar.
Miranda IM - A multi protocol instant messenger client supports for ICQ, AIM, MSN, Jabber, Yahoo, Gadu-Gadu, Tlen, Netsend and other protocols.
