Avast 7.0 free edition alongwith zonealarm. I am using both since very very long time without having any issue.

If you are really concerned about your important files and folders being infected go for Norton Security 2012. Best of the lot. I am using it for the past 10 years.. no issues at all.

I use avast. Its a free version but it has kept my system clean. So this for me is the best antivirus and when I'm ready I won't mind upgrading to the paid version.

Nod is very popular among them. Some antivirus software will affect the speed of the system.
