Getting "Slashdotted" will crush your host's server. That is how enormous the effect is. They will probably send you more traffic than you can handle! Digg still has a way to go to get to Slashdot's level. But they are growing very rapidly.

No you don't need a blog. You just need a sign up for a Digg account.

The site is still feeling the effects of yesterday’s Digg. It looks like today’s traffic will be just as high as yesterday because of not only the link from Digg.com but from all the sites that picked up the story because of Digg.

Many sites on the net syndicate Digg’s news via RSS feeds or manual editing so if you get a story Dugg, not only will you get a huge rush of traffic, you’ll also get dozens of backlinks within a day or two. The backlinks will send traffic and increase your search engine ranking.

No matter how you look at it, this is a good thing.

the digg effect is absolutely crazy. I would still like to see that stats of digg's front page. If you are getting 25,000 page views from one story, imagine what he is getting from multiple stories

I'd have to agree that the best part of being Dugg is the backlinks. I just launched an iPod forum in mid-January and it's already showing a PR5 since a few threads were Dugg to the front page.

So I definitely wouldn't agree with those who say Digg traffic isn't good b/c it just eats bandwidth and doesn't convert. It can get your site out there and is a good natural way to build backlinks.

Any stories I have submitted to digg or shoutwire never go anywhere. And I am talking about stories on other people's sites. No matter how controversial! I clearly have no idea what is "geek cool".

Consequently, I have to applaud you for having content which makes it.

I have had stories listed on LinuxToday. It also has an impact on visits . . . but not nearly as dramatic as SlashDot or some of the other big news sites.

Here is a tip for what it's worth. Slashdot is all about good content, Digg is all about the title of the post and the category you post the news.
Here is an example (none of those are mine)
    This article got digged
    http://www.digg.com/hardware/World’s_Smallest_GPS_Receiver

While this one for exactly the same news that was posted before the one above received just 8 diggs
    http://digg.com/technology/Worlds_Smallest_GPS_Receiver.

What is the difference between the 2 posts?
The second one was submitted to technology which is by far the most active category and it got burried really quick under new submissions while the first one was submitted to hardware a less "competitive" category.

    Here are a few tips
Titles: use superlatives (according to my experience they work)
Lists: lists get digged much easier than other posts
Freebies: everyone loves freebies, post about freebies
Lists of freebies: (2 in 1) I got two posts like that digged :D
Categories: Choose the least competitive category that your post can fit into

One of my posts on my blog got to the front page of Digg and the hits to my blog went from around 4000 on normal days to over 55,000. That's the power of social networking!

I don't use digg much, but had couple pages in shoutwire on homepage, it's not that hard, the effect is not the same of course, but still couple thousand visitors, though it was quite useless to me..

No increase in earnings, no new links, even no increase in alexa stats :(

PS: tops, get a digg from me ;)

I've had several of my stories hit the frontpage of digg and virtually every time its lead to at least 20K views or more.

How come it gets a score of 33 but at the bottom it says 37 people Dugg this?

PS, seems screwed it now says I submitted it 5 seconds ago:

    Been more like 5 hours.

Eventually it resolved back to normal but for a while, inc refgreshing, it was still there even after it had reported the correct time before. Anyway... Just want to beat this stat:

It's been like that for way too long.
