The algorithm is quite complex but here is how it works:

You have just over 24 hours to get enough votes - after that your submission can no longer reach front page.

    - Different categories are more competitive and require more diggs to reach the front page.
    - Usually need between 30 - 100 diggs to hit front page
    - People can mark you as spam or bury your post which damages your chances - if enough do it you get completely buried
    - The quicker you get diggs the better
    - Votes from authority diggers are worth more
    - The way in which people found your digg can be worth more (I expect digs direct from your site, or from links clicked in email (external referrer) are worth less
    - Submissions from reputable submitters can be worth more.

There’s more but I’m signing off for the day and can’t remember :)

    Why's this important?

40,000 visits in 24 hrs that's why!!!!! Plus loads of links as other sites pick up on your great article.

I've hit the front page for the last 6 months, every month!

It is possible but you need to submit really really really good content that the digg crowd are into to make it.

Also don't forget propeller, delicious, slashdot and reddit - also good sources of traffic.

This is great - can I ask, have the hits brought you business or revenue? If they have, what ways have you used to generate that?

Be happy to have the traffic but it would be nice for it to turn into something.

Well done, by the way - an enviable achievement!

Just like tigertwo, I'm wondering if any of them clicked your ads? Normally more advanced users don't even see adsense ads, if that's what you're running...

The real secret: write lists, not articles. These sites love a good list.

Digg traffic is actually not that good of traffic... Its mainly for the backlinks.

I must say getting front page digg was the defining moment for my proxy site. It was already starting to get popular but doubled almost instantly because of digg and kept going up from there. If your site has recurring value versus a one-off article, you will see more value from getting front paged.

Well a lot of diggers are getting tired of top lists.
write good content instead or break news before anybody else.

the quality of digg visitors are quite bad, they usually stay for very short time.
But if you get something on the front page, you can get a lot of backlinks, which is a lot better than 40.000 visitors in 24 hours.

Great post. It reaffirmed everything I've ever read about Digg every time someone talks about it. I already knew that you needed lots of votes to get on the front page of Digg, but somehow reading it again has taught me a lot.

Digg is useful to gain some link pop and get indexed quickly by Google - but usually Digg visitors (especially in the thousands) can create more headaches than revenue.

yeah my CTR on my ads goes down. But it still bumps up my earnings considerably when I get a digg front page. You will want to consider other monetization options as well - such as CPM banners and affiliate programs.

I'm wondering if making 70 or so accounts (which will take time of course) and use them all to digg a story in less than 10 minutes will get an article to the front page?
