I read some statistics somewhere that majority of users use the www when linking. For this reason think it a good idea to use the www. If you get links to both Google will view single site as two sites and hence split potential page rank between the two.

I think the best thing is to pick one and stick with it. I have decided to pick the www flavor.

Shawn, what htaccess statement do you use for the 301 redirect?

It doesn't at all matter which form you prefer, but you absolutely, positively need to pick one or the other and establish it as your canonical form.

Some feel that the public has been brainwashed to believe that all web URLs begin with www. Others feel that without the www, a URL looks cleaner and simpler, and possibly easier to remember. I prefer the second approach, but doubt mightily that it matters much at all.

But whichever you pick as your canonical form, you need to have directives in your .htaccess file (God help those not hosted on Apache server software) to 301-redirect calls to the wrong form over to the canonical form, else the search engines will see two utterly separate sets of pages--in effect, two distinct sites. And they will "credit" links to one or the other, depending on which form the linking page used (over which you have no control), not both. In the worst case, you could lose half your potential backlink strength.

There is more in this SEO Tip "That pesky www", including suitable .htaccess directives.
