well my friend runs an adult forum, and entertainment based forum he has over 250k posts and 7.5k members around 15 - 16 months, he doesn't have a good SEO though - google still has some keywords on top pages, his forum hardly generates income. He has donation feature on but hardly one registers, so forums aren't successful for every one. The only reason I see my friend running the forum is for his reputation among the members. He is well respected among the community.

Each forum with diff. niche has a different strategy to apply to succeed, its just they have to find the real hits in it and they can be a huge hit.

The tips mentioned are good, but they aren't all the ones enough to get success.

p.s: I have just started to look into his forums and I am looking to improve his stats ratio

I used to have a forum that I spent a lot of time on. It is very hard to get quality posters, especially if you don't have many posts to begin with. No one wants to go to a forum where no one is there.
I know that many forums use paid posters to get started. I used to be one.
However, once it gains momentum a forum can generate a lot of traffic and page views.

That's exactly correct! You want to have an active looking forum, and by hiring a poster that's exactly how you'll be able to find your initial success.

The many times I've considered a forum as a business venue, I've declined. Your post gives a sense of relief and hope that it can be done. Interesting post, by the way, and yes, you did spark a conversation....exactly like what would be needed to get your own forum going.

Idea is great to start forum posting, but reason why I would not go into forum building is :

    a. It is quite saturated and topics for new forum building are less with higher competition
    b. The normal posters become 'blind' to the ads that are displayed.

However, an established forum buying is a good deal.

I've built a few semi-successful forums. My intent was not to make profit from the forum site but to get a niche of members that I could eventually redirect to my store.

If you're going to start a forum it better offer something interesting or else its just going to be a waste of your time, forums aren't that easy because its a community thing that needs to catch on with people...

It's easier if you start off with people you already know from a previous contacts list. Other than that, starting from scratch would be indeed very difficult as no one is inclined to speak about anything.

We started a career forum about six months ago and it is really hard to get it going, I agree with on of the previous poster that it has snowball effect to it. Anyway we slowly starting to get some more signups now. I am just surprised how all the spammers managed to find us right away.

i have a forum started in november 2009 .but didnt start seo until a couple months ago. I have about 2800 members and getting around 350 signups a day and growing usually 10-20 signups a day. i have about 500 active members a day. usually 5-10 online all the time. really happy with the results. hope to start chargin once i get 20-30k members. make certain forums private then charge for a signiature feature that i'm putting in. charge like $10 for a lifetime membership.
