transparent PNGs with 'overlay' blend mode effect?

    I have a website design which uses the 'overlay' photoshop blending mode to give the effect that there's a light behind a solid panel. When laid over the textured background, the effect works well.

    My problem is that when I'm slicing the design, I'm doing the light glow slice as a png with alpha transparency. Obviously, since the background isn't in place I am losing the overlay effect.

    Is there any trick to reproducing this, other than saving it with a piece of background showing? My background is a tile and this doesn't look as flawless as I'd like.

    My best guess would be that it's possible to alter the blend mode, or somehow reproduce a similar effect using the 'normal' blend style, but I am at a loss so far..
