In early days i started using twiends but it's not recommended to long term following

 

waste of time and money. all you get is same people like you whom just looking to get more followers, and not really interested in what you are offering. they never read your tweets and you never read theirs. all it creates is: junk<-->junk . Sorry, but this is what such accounts are.
When I see accounts with 1000 followers and 1000 following, that is sign that this user just using one of such tools. Normally you should have many followers, but follow normal number of people.
I'm not using any of these tools and so far gained more than 2250 followers, while I following just 22 (see my example http://twitter.com/#!/ourclassifieds)
Just tweet interesting things, follow normal users and eventually you will get your followers.

 

You can unfollow everyone and have more followers. it add credential to your twitter account, making ppl feel like following. If I have only 5 followers, I don't think anyone will want to follow me.
