Doubtful...what would anyone's motivation be to use it, since Twitter already exists?

Not a good idea. Come up with something more original. No one would bother with a twitter clone.

Unless you can offer something that twitter doesn't, no one will use it.

Twitter isn't making money (or at least that's what people say), so that makes it twice a bad idea.

Copy something that's successful in more than just hype if you're trying to make money from it :)

Have you ever seen a patten forming with all the large online companies? They all have vast amounts of funding and a strategy of how they intend to compete with rivals, I mean creating another Twitter clone to me isn't a USP!

I think a better business idea would be to try and capitalize on all of the hype around Twitter and provide companies with tools and services for integrating Twitter into their website/business.

Twitter clone is a bad idea. Using twitter to form a following in a niche is a great idea.

Most people on DP have the extremely *weird* perception that things need to be original while most money making ideas are blind copies of something that is already there. I'm not talking about > $100 million sites; statistically about 0% of DP people will make a site like that in their life. But most here are looking for something that would make them a few $1000 /month and for that original / new / whatever is not required at all. Almost any idea, however unoriginal and saturated it maybe be can make money. Hell; a friend of mine makes $5k/month with a $5 'milliondollar pixel page'. Without alterations... I guess the comments here are why almost no one makes a decent living from the internet on DP. Trying to be the next big thing instead of just a ripoff and actually making money is generally a *bad* idea; chances of making it big are less than getting hit by lightening and it'll cost you A LOT of time and money to even attempt it. So yes; start it, work on it, make some monetizing schemes and put it out there. If it doesn't work; who cares; go over to the next thing.

i would not say it is a bad idea...however, i might approach it differently. for example, i would not try to compete with twitter, instead i would target an actual niche. look at all the niche "myspace" sites out there...plenty of money being made on those :)

    Couldn't agree less.

Even Twitter is a bad business model. They spend more than they make (which is basically nothing currently).

Twitter might not be making much now but when Yahoo or Google buys them they will cash out billions..

There is nothing wrong with copying a good business model and tweaking it to make it your own. However something like twitter is not a good thing to do this with IMO. Social networking sites like twitter, myspace, facebook, etc. get people joining because their friends are there and they have a reason to join. Unless you've got a big budget and a good incentive plan to get people joining in the first place then it is destined to fail. Why join your site when none of my friends or business associates are on there? It's a bit like a forum where once you have a good number of members it will continue to grow. But if the threads and posts stop or stagnate then you are in big trouble as it will get even worse due to people not coming back as they are not finding any new info.

I think you could find a better business idea if you put your mind to it.
