Understanding the "Like" option

i just joined this forum a couple of days ago and have been quite impressed by what ive found here

however i just dont understand how the "like" button is supposed to work, i read the rules here and found that its best to be an established member as you get a couple of perks and also it encourages you to contribute some helpful posts which would benefit people

so this is exactly what ive tried to do, now someone had posted in one of the sections about how he wanted to build his first pc, i was the only person who responded and gave him some good advice which will probably save him from damaging his expensive pc parts

now this guy is an established member and even thanked me for my post and advise however he didnt like my reply

which leads me to believe what ive read on another thread where someone wrote the best way to get likes is to have some funky girl name with a pic of some eastern european chick wearing as least as possible....

I agree! If members are getting good replies, they should be generous to hit the "Like" button.Sometimes, people have a fear that hitting "like" may invite some infraction / warning and they opt to be on the safer side of maintaining their "Established" member status.

Well, complaining about not getting likes certainly won't get you any.

    not complaining buddy,

just pointing out that if you take time and effort on a post to help someone out, and that person finds your post helpful, and even thanks you for it then why not show some appreciation i am sure that is why the like button exists in the first place

if this is against rules then accept my apologies i must have misunderstood what the "like" button is all about

    so sorry in advance :)

That is a much easier route to take but in the general sense the end-goal isn't to receive a like but deliver value and if someone happens to like it they will "like" it. Just keep doing what you do and you'll have a ton of likes in no time.

Participation is the best way to have 'likes'. And if you are honest with your comments even better.

I mean that's obvious but every person's circumstance is different. It might take one person 20 post to receive 1 like with crappy post and another person with quality might have to post 200X to get 1 like.

Well, if you are chasing 'likes' instead of having good time here, you won't have any 'likes'. Don't look for a way. Just relax. Be honest with your comments. There is no way you can please everyone here.

Most definitely. The more fun you have with it the more effortless it will be to build reputation and value.

    /Agree

Apparently my little male nurse in my profile picture isn't attractive to most members =)

On another note, congrats on getting being accepted into the establishment
