Unexpected competition

I'm new to the game of SEO. Extremely new I found out today. Since becoming a member here I found out that you could get enormous numbers of visitors from G if you play it right. So what I did was that I selected a page on my main site that I decided I could do some on and off page optimizing for. I selected my keyphrase and added an ad in Co-op.

Then tonight I fired up the browser to look at the competition, went to G and searched for my selected phrase. Everything looked nice, lots of adsense ads promising some profit. Even started to load the first ten results in new windows to get inspiration for the content I was about to write.

At this time I thought "hey, how many results are I competing with". I checked that and quickly decided to try another phrase. Somehow it doesn't seem like a good choise to start your studies in competition with 170.000.000 other pages, but I might just be easily intimidated

Just because Google says 170,000,000 results does not mean that those webpages have been optimized for your keyword phrase. If you optimize for that specific page you should be able to compete.

To lower the facts try allintitle and allinanchor results. You will be astonished to see how many results are gone. ;)

If there is one thing I learned in the SEO business is that you just don't really know how hard it is sometimes. Take two of our clients one has a main KW that has 31M results and the other has 2M but believe me the client with 31M was easier to optimize for. The client with 2M has a very competitive industry and savvy SEO's.

Sometimes it's not what it seems. The results with the little number sometimes have a bigger force between them.

For all the people on all the sites working like mad it's amazing how many keywords are still "going free". Look through your logs and see the searches people make to get to your site, mostly nonsense searches etc but they're still unoptimised words where if someone had a reason to want those visitors it'd be easy to get in there and get them.

I found that when I blogged on a crowd in NZ called NBO and despite NBO being a common acronym I made it to page 1 in days. I've since slipped back because I'm not actively pursuing those keywords but it was a good example of rising quickly.

    Yeah thats right sarahk,
Every human in this world have 100s of meaning full keywords if you divide keywords by humans. The problem is that we are not able to find these quality keywords. We all are follwing what is found to be working for "other people". Thus competing ourselves. Instead if we try some research and find a nice KW, we will be top and no one will be competing with us.

I always astonish how amazing is search engines.

PS: thinking of possibilities we have 26! [26 factorial] combination of letters. Which is greater than number of sand grains in this planet.

Thank you all for the emotional support, I might go after this phrase sometime, but for now I think I'll try and find something where I can find myself today and try to get that one to the first page :)

I think that is the number of possible combinations of all letters a-z without repeating any letter. Still the number of 8 letter words possible is impressive, 26^8 = 208.827.064.576 and there are I believe some shorter words to add to that :D

I know exactly what you are talking about. Every once in a while I'll come across some random phrase that gets traffic and I think, hey I could come up with some themed content that fit that KW. Thankfully I don't end up writing any chicka chicka boom boom articles.

Then would these results be less intimidating to you?

    phrase: 160.000.000
    allintitle: 160.000
    allinanchor: 190.000
    "exact phrase" 8.610.000

Considering I only have very little Coop weight, is this something thats possible for me to succeed with? How far would I get with some on page optimizing and a little coop? Can I break top 10?

Take a look at the sites that are currently in the top 10, see what they have been up to. my guesses:

    - lots of inbound links
    - lots of pages on there site
    - lots of additional websites linking to their main site side wide

then check your site: should your site be up there? (if you would have been google/msn/y!) not to discourage you, but getting on the first page with a common phrase is hard but not impossible. dedication, hard work, some believe, and you will be able to get there!

    Go rock their socks, Perrow!

Seriously though I'd check to see if there aren't any other keywords/phrases you could optimize for that me be easier... one of the big things with any keyword is how much competition there is. Just like smindsrt said, there could be a bigger force between the lower number of competition. Just do your homework ahead of time and you should be off to a good start!
