US Katrina Donations & Help Index

Discussion in 'General Chat' started by Dreamshop, Sep 2, 2005.

While there is a long thread discussing Katrina, I wanted to make sure people were able to access donation information directly.

Red Cross is probably the best place to start, and the American Auto Association is matching donations....

    1. Go here: https://secure.entango.com/donate/7CpMvAKkfYk
    2. Select "AAA Hurricane Relief" under the drop down menu for "Program"

MoveOn.org has setup a website to help connect housing with displaced survivors, if you can offer an extra bedroom or two.
    http://www.hurricanehousing.org/

Here are some more organizations that are coordinating efforts to help the New Orleans recovery.

    Feed The Children
Relief focus: Feed the Children has long been competent at mobilizing and distributing supplies to disaster victims and victims of famine and disease. They are currently mobilizing a massive relief effort by gathering needed supplies and getting them to hurricane devastated areas.

    The Salvation Army
Relief focus: The Salvation Army is prepared to provide 400,000 hot meals a day to displaced disaster victims and emergency personnel working to aid those devastated by Hurricane Katrina. They also provide a means for individuals to physically volunteer their time and assistance in the relief efforts.

Humane Society of the United States
Relief focus: Dispatching Disaster Animal Response Teams (DARTs) to rescue animals and assist their caregivers.

    ASPCA
Relief focus: Although they do not yet have anything specific to Katrina up on their site, the ASPCA sends emergency relief to animal shelters when natural disasters occur.

    North Shore Animal League America
Relief focus: NSAL America has an emergency response team that is ready to respond in the event of an emergency. In 2004, we responded to the devastating hurricanes in the south.

    United Way
Relief focus: United Way is leading response and recovery efforts by working hard to identify the most serious needs of devastated communities and is committed to helping not only with front-line disaster relief but with long-term recovery—those needs that are often not addressed in the days, weeks and months following a disaster.

    America's Second Harvest
Relief focus: They expect at least ten food banks and hundreds of related agencies will be hit by hurricane 'Katrina'. Their Network is in great need of funds to transport food to victims and secure additional warehouse space to assist our Member food banks in resuming and maintaining operations.

    Direct Relief International
Relief focus: Because of the organization’s extensive medical inventories, Direct Relief serves as a private back-up support to official emergency response efforts in the United States.

    Habitat for Humanity
Relief focus: Helping disaster victims rebuild piece by piece and house by house.

Every little bit helps even if you can only have spare change to give. :)

I just sent off four huge boxes of clothing to a friend of mine that has taken two families into her home. She lives in TN and her neighbors have done the same.

They're helping over 150 people already.

If anyone has clothing they're willing to part with (not crap), PM me for her address.

They're accepting clothing, shoes, toiletries and anything else you think might be useful.

If you can't afford to ship/mail stuff, let me know and I can reimburse you for whatever it costs.

I've heard they are also accepting donations of goods at shelters, so if you know of anyone living near a shelter you can ship items to them so they can drop them off. I'm trying to get in touch with someone at the Red Cross to confirm that it is okay (that they won't start turning donations away). I know people in Texas, Oklahoma, Tennessee, etc, who are taking in evacuees.

I'm also going to try and see if MOveOn.org would be able to connect people with hosts that need help supporting evacuees in their homes since they are running the Hurricane Housing website.

Reports are coming out now which show that Homeland Security would NOT allow Red Cross into New Orleans at all this week. Their comment is that allowing RC to setup food stations would keep people from evacuating. :( :( :(

Yeh i was thinking that. The richest country in the world and there own leader cant raise ALL the funds. Iv still donated because there are a hell of a lot of people in need out there. Wish i could afford a ticket out there so i could help properly.

Bush said this is much worse than the 9/11
duh, 9/11 was 2 tower blocks, this is an area of devastation the size of britain.

Craigslist has put together special Katrina boards and posting folders to help people find housing, loved ones, etc. There are several for areas in and around the Gulf including Lousiana, Alabama, Mississippi, Florida, and Texas.

Also there is a new search engine with PPC that donates its income to American Red Cross. So if you dont have anything to donate, you can just use this site for your internet searches and you will in fact have donated.

http://www.katrina.com is what used to be a personal website for a web designer, Katrina. She turned the site into a helpful portal for disaster relief. The site has lots of up-to-date info on how to help

Well I just got this email from a friend who used to run a catering business in Houston. She's been helping some of the displaced families. If you would like to send anything, let me know. And again, I will reimburse you for any shipping fees if they pose a problem for you.

I'm sending a bunch of Target gift cards. I figured this way people could go buy whatever they want.

I got an email from my friend in Tennessee.

Here's some of what she wrote:

So please, if you have extra clothing, clothing you don't mind parting with or clothing you don't wear very often, please give it to someone in need. And if you would like to send it to displaced people in Texas or Tennessee, let me know and I will give you an address to send it to.

One DP member from London had a great idea and is going to send some stuff from Amazon (free freight ;) ) to some these people. :D

Maybe we can all buy something here and ship it to your friends for distribution. I prefer this direct approach 1000 times over the Red Cross etc.

Search eBay US for 'clothes', buy them and send them to Rob's friends who will hand them out.

If Rob and others are willing to coordinate delivery addresses I'm sure can come up with a ton of clothes and whatever is needed. Makes shipping easy since it's the seller's effort. And there's quite some bargains to be had on that search and we can probably find some other good searches and products suitable as well.
