using Beta label (or not)

    hi
    what advantages or disadvantages are there for using the beta label on a new website service?
    if used, when does the beta label get ditched?

    Unlike say, a traditional software application which gets version releases, a website is likely to get continuous tweaking & development etc.

    Some companies, like google, use beta despite offering the services for 5 years with up to 150 million customers!!

    Does it add any value or is it just "Oh, something is broken or not working pefectly - that's because it's our beta system....!" a get out of trouble card, baloney.

    just debating if and how we'll use it on a new web service

    Thank you

    I find beta to be more of a "This program or software is buggy and we are working on improving it"
    Some sites use it to be "Exclusive"

    I would ditch it once your employees get used to the software or the major bugs get kinked out.

    It also depends on what you are offering. Virus protection should start off as a beta and then move out of it after a few months.
    Web hosting companies can take much longer to remove the beta name and some help desk companies do not even use the term beta.
