Using images on websites

I have seen creative ways in which designers have implemented images on their websites. However, I wonder if adding more images would slow down the website. Therefore having a negative effect instead of a positive one.

Does anyone have more experience in this field?

I don't mean to be rude, but have you just arrived from the 90s?

We're in 2023, here. Images are an inherent and absolutely essential part of web design. So, unless you want your site to look like an online relic, then yes, by all means, include images in your web design.

    Look at Apple's site: https://www.apple.com/
    Lots of images.

Look at this forum, here. Lots of images as well.

    Good luck.

Since you seem a bit new to this game, you need to be aware that if you use images that you do not have the rights to use, an attorney from the image owner will contact you to collect fees and penalties.

I think using images is important but also give some serious thought on what type of images you want to include on the page. There are some great stock image sites you can buy images from and some stock image sites are free; creating them yourself with your phone, pad, etc. is also a great option.

Whats hot today is embedding videos from youtube, vimeo, etc. that will definitely increase interest.

Good luck with your project and have fun with it.

Thank you guys for some tips and facts.
I've researched this area and read a few blogs and you guys are right. I have optimised my images for better performance and SEO scores.
One of the interesting blogs I came across was one called creative ways to use images on your website. I used two of their suggestions and it made my website look and feel better. It might be worth a read since it could have a trick or tip or design element you may not have thought of.

If you would like me to update you on my project process just say. Its going at a steady pace at the moment and hopefully it will be fully optimised soon.

It is always a good idea to have a fair amount of images/video on your website, but so that your site speed doesn't suffer it is recommended to use low to mid quality and resized (smaller) images :)

Always try to use compress image for the website (less than 100 kb).

I'll keep that in mind. Thank you!

However not all images can be less than 100kb. So I'm guessing its ok to go alittle higher sometimes for bigger images.

No they can't but they may load quicker if you split them into 4 images of 25kb in webp format and set up the page to put the 4 images side by side with no guttering etc.

Lazy loading. Then, as long as they are below the fold, use as many and as large as you need them to be.

Images form a very essential part of a website's overall performance metrics. Just to mention three quick ones that everyone online should implement:
    1. Readability: Images enhance how much of your article will get read. try to keep one featured image plus one for every additional 300 words.
    2. SEO value: Images add to the overall SEO score of a website. An image with an alternate Text will land 3 - 5 points to your Google value. Use the image-to-word ratio in point 1
    3. Sales: An attractive image will increase sales by up to 43%.
Go ahead and enhance your pages with relevant images.

Thats actually such a good idea! I would have never thought of that. Thank you for the tip, I think I will definitely try that on larger images.
