vBulletin Referrals

For anyone running a vBulletin forum... promoting a forum appears to be a very popular topic among forum owners, if not everyone else.

"Referrals" are one of the best forms of promotion and vBulletin is already set up with "referral links". Unfortunately, many forum members are not aware of these links. For those that are aware, many can relate with the hassle of having to drill down through the FAQ to find the link.

IMO, the easier you make it for someone to send you a referral the more referrals you will receive. With this in mind, I posted a template mod at vBulletin.org called "Referral ID in User CP."

This easy modification adds a content box in the User CP displaying the user's "Referral" link and a referral "Message" that can be customized using "Phrase Manager" in the Admin CP.

You know what they say, "Out of sight out of mind."

I don't understand the point of this. If someone is already a member, why would you send them a referral? Or if the idea is you send the referral ID to a non-member, what's the point of that? Why not just send them the link to this forum and suggest they join?

 

This "mod" aims to increase referrals to a forum by enlisting the help of its current members. Via Admin CP, a custom referral message [solicitation] can be scripted and displayed in a content box in the User CP. IMO, when you let members know what you want they are more apt to help. Not unlike the help members provided with DP's new servers.

Another feature of this mod is that the member's unique vB referral link is also displayed in the User CP instead of being buried on the FAQ page. Many people get satisfaction from the recognition and/or rewards of referring others. IMO, this is what drives "Referral Contests". Having the link displayed in the User CP not only serves as another visual reminder but also makes it easier for those members who are specifically looking for the link.
