I need a .wav file for a can of worms being opened :D

I've been doing bit of research into type 2 diabetes and there's a school of thought that the physiological state that develops into type 2 makes you overeat and get fat, not the other way around.

There is an effect that works against the person with type 2 that causes them to be hungry but most have bad eating habits that created the problem in the first place. I didn't want to sound mean, but sometimes the truth has to be spoken. Most (and I said most not all) people have poor eating habits (and not educated in what they really need to supplement with) that create or make worse the health problems they have from diabetes to liver problems, hormonal imbalances to sexual problems. Cancers are affected by what you eat and with the right foods can be controlled or your body can even get rid of.

I also know people with diabetes and I have seen what they eat, it is incredible what an old boss still eats even while he keeps getting worse and is told what will help. I also know people who have had HUGE success with the right supplements, and I myself am borderline hypoglycemic, but have no syptoms anymore. (check out the glycemic index for help with balancing your diet in a balanced and sound way, not just a fad diet.)

I've tended to use the term "self inflicted" which hasn't won me any friends.

That's why I found that article so challenging and I need to learn more. Type 2 is a huge problem down here and I know that our "more is better" mindset causes huge problems when applied to food. We feel richer when we eat more, but in doing so we become so much poorer.

I've been a vegetarian for 20 years now - strict vegan for many of those years. It is and has always been a personal choice for me - one that has cost me friendships and hardships at times. But it may well be one of the best life altering decisions I ever made.

I don't give a rat's behind what manner of slow death anyone else chooses. Caveat emptor.

I guess I should just state : all americans should just eat less meat.
I hope I didn't offend anyone here who is struggling, but is also being honest about how much they eat. I see it all the time with people struggling including those who say they have a problem and they say they really don't eat much and then you watch how much they eat and at what time. Many people eat right before going to bed and they seem to have the most weight gain. The other factor is they skip breakfast and sometimes lunch and the eat a huge dinner and then a late night snack (meal). I will have to say that 99% of the people I know that struggle with weight (which is nearly everyone I know) has terrible eating habits and they lie to themselves about how much they eat.

I have seen some of these people change overtime with some health education. Teaching them about the types of foods that rate high on the glycemic index and those that are low or moderate. Then teach them about how the body can be trained to store fat and slow down the metabolism by eating a few meals or eating right before sleeping.

I had the struggle on the opposite side of the scale and could not gain, but that has changed with understanding food.

Sorry if I sound offensive in this subject, it sort of is a pet peeve with me that people are eating themselves to death and are clueless to ways of changing that.

This includes vegitarians, which we lost a coach at gymnastics to cancer who was a strict vegitarian who thought he was doing great things for his health. I don't think he was even 40 yet, but looked like he was 50 with the sunken eyes. He also wasn't overweight, but was underweight.

I've often wondered if it's easier to be slim if your friends are slim too, and harder if they're not.

I look around at the social groupings of the Mums at school (we all get there early if we can so we can have a chat) and I'd say that ethnicity isn't a factor but that body shape is. The tall mums stick together, the short mums, the skinny mums and the rounder mums. This is probably because we feel more comfortable with people who reflect ourselves, but does it become self perpetuating?

So, if you want to be slim should you ditch your chubby mates (for a while)?

I am in the U.S.A. where most vegitarians think their education in dance or acting makes them smart enough to eat right, I guess.

I am NOT saying that all vegi-heads (whoops did I say that) vegitarians are unhealthy, but most around here are. (Visit areas with many vegitarians like Ashland oregon or santa cruz california and check out the poor health, maybe a link to the dope thread would be appropriate here also. :))

I wasn't offended, I was just saying it's not always as simple as eat less :)

You are right though, there are a lot of people who don't understand how much they eat. It takes education to understand a portion size. Going to a restaurant for example, and ordering a meal - they usually contain 2 or 3 portions of food, yet most people will eat it all at one meal. America has this obsession with super sizing portions.

i eat a lot of meat, but not a lot of red meat. i'm trying to learn to appreciate the taste of fish...but that's hard going, but i know it's healthier for me.

Vegetarians are a joke, they can eat all they want that excludes meat, but at the end of the day, they are still made of meat. And I'm told in a jamb, they taste pretty good too!

Humans have a natural built in instinct to live. If it came down to it, you would eat meat. That's a good thing. If you didn't do it, then there is a neurological problem.

I'm a very finicky eater, however, when stuck in the woods, I ate a few things I would pass up with the fridge down the hall.

    Mother nature always prevails.

"Maybe if fat people just ate less food we can have a big effect on the meat industry!"

For fat people who are fat people because they don't stop eating. They aren't shovelling meat down thier throat all the day. It's the other crap that's to blame. Candy, Sweets, Potato chips, popcorn covered in sugar or fat, chocolate, sandwiches and the evil fizzy drinks. You rarely see them shovelling meat into thier mouths for hours on end.

I've often had trouble with my weight, but it's never been all to do with what's on my plate at meal times. Rather, the crap going down between meals.

And I'm not a rabit carnivore, in case that's what it sounds like. I eat red meat once or twice a month and I can't actually remember the last time I ate white meat.

    Cheers

This thread has really taken off

My original point was just my personal preference that I don't eat meat from animals treated in that way and I don't think these animals are "grateful" for being treated this way.

I actually have full respect for those that hunt and eat their own meat, use the other parts. That to me is natural. I don't have a problem with people that eat farmed meat either really, thats their choice.

Its just my personal preference which I don't force on other people. In fact most people wouldn't even know I was that way as I never talk about it.
