I think this topic is getting hotter with an increase popularity of social media sites. In my opinion it should not be matter of choice between website and e.g. Facebook. The website is essential, and the social media sites are places where you should be if your potential clients hang out there.
Website and social media are highly relevant and both can feed into each other and create a stable foundation to your business.
    1. Website is a virtual reflection of your business, your e-business card, which provides your existing and potential clients with key information about you, your product/service, allows them to contact with you.
    2. Social Media (e.g. Facebook, Twitter) are valuable and useful tools, allow your customers to spread the word about your business and take an active part in your brand building.
What is your point of view?

I don't think this that much of a discussion. Yes, obviously having an official business website is a necessity. And yes, social media sites are crucial for reaching your target markets, creating "buzz" and generating traffic to your websites. Who is out there saying you should pick one or the other?

    Hello sumluv3,

Both websites (optimized for conversion) and social media (that focus on engagement) are needed to have a successful business.

A successful website puts the same kind of effort into conversion as they do into driving traffic to their site. Traffic without an emphasis on conversion limits your growth and reduces your profitability. No company wants to spend money on driving traffic only to turn away potential customers. If your website isn’t optimized for conversion, it will turn away potential customers by confusing them, distracting them, and frustrating them.

A website optimized for conversion is an engaging, attractive, simple, convenient, secure website. Continually improving your customer’s experience on your site is the key to conversion optimization.

We closely track our traffic sources in Google Analytics. Referrals to our website from our blogs and social media spend more than double the amount of time on our site, visit more than twice as many pages and have half the bounce rate of our direct, organic or ppc traffic. These statistics are consistent over time. That said, after a while you realize that all social media isn't created equal. Using a shotgun approach to blasting tweets out there, isn't engagement. Engagement is what creates quality traffic, leads and sales/clients.

    Kindly,

    Shelby : )

Optimizing your website for conversion isn't expensive. Leaving money on the table is.

Yes, as many marketers said, they have different purposes. Its like, the website is the main location of the firm, then social media is the advertisement which helps for the promotion of the business. It's like apples and oranges. :)
