What are backlinks?

I'm wondering if someone has a concise definition of what are backlinks. For example, do paid advertisements count as backlinks? Also, how do these backlink companies that you pay generate backlinks for you? Wouldn't these paid backlinks by definition be spammy and get ignored by the search engines or even worse they could cause your site to get de-ranked? Are there quality backlink companies vs sketchy ones?
