    I don't know how google use spread in the US - but here in The Netherlands it spread at a time when the internet was still small - and everyone told everyone else about it. No special marketing needed: you learned to internet from someone and someone showed you google. If before that you had used altavista (Yahoo wasn't on the horizon here), you were SOO happy to be using a SE that actually gave relevant results... Classic viral marketing for you: people referred each other to google because it was the best. ILSE - a Dutch SE - was pretty big at the time as well, but its use has just plummeted. Probably just because it wasn't as good as google is.

    As for yahoo using google - sure that may have helped a bit. But how many ordinary users actually noticed that yahoo was using the google-search engine?
