What causes hangover - how to avoid it?

Does anyone know what causes hangover. I have had days where I had a terrific hangover by drinking just 3 pegs and no hangover whatsoever after drinking 6 pegs. Is it the ambience u drink in? Food? The brand...what is it really?

I've always been told that hangovers are caused by dehydration. I always drink water between drinks and then plenty before bed.

i think jc_yusuke link answered it pretty much. If i remember corrrectly its the congeners in the booze that causes the hangover. Congeners are impurities such as methanol, when the liver starts to process alcohol it gets to work on the ethanol and doesnt mind that but then when it starts work on the methanol it breaks it down into formaldehyde then formic acid. The formaldehyde causes the nasua and vomitting, then the mineral depletion and dehydration helps cause the hangovers etc. Dark alcohols are supposed to have more congeners in them than light alcohol.
SO things like brandy, red wine and whiskey are bad, white wine, gin and vodka are good.

However for myself both white wine and vodka give me killer hangovers, brandy is the wrost though but i think thats more to do with the fact i only buy cheap stuff guaranteed to rot your gut

Thanx for the tips but I feel alot better the next day after I have whisky. Beer makes me feel lazy, Vodka and Rum are a No NO for me cos they give a worst hangover as compared to whisky.

I drink 3 pegs a day and approx 4 days a week on an avg. Is that too bad for my liver? or is it normal? What shld i do to protect my liver (please dont say stop drinking)...I did start having tablets like LIV 52 daily but someone said theres no need for it cos they can harm u...

    Any inputs are really appreciated...Thanx!!!

I was always told it was the sugar that I mixed with my drinks - but I could drink a martini or a jack daniels straight up and still had massive hangovers. Beer, wine, hard liquor, didn't matter.

I was also told not to mix my alcohol. Can't tell you how to stop a hangover: but I *can* tell how to avoid it.

    Wait for it.....

    Don't Drink! :)

yes i thought the same, before u sleep drag a 2 litre bottle of water up to bed with you.

also a nice greasy breakfast can help stop u feeling sick (although if you try running about it will come back)

No but I have seen it in the store.

Best hangover cure is a pint or two of water before going to sleep and in the morning have a big old fry-up, the greasier the better but holding it down is the tricky part :(

I forgot my dads cure: a shot or four of peppermint schnapps in the morning.

This coming from a man who used to put scotch or whiskey in his milk.....

It seems people have it right. 2L of water before bed is a must. Even if your puking hard, puke it all out... then FORCE yourself to drink the water even though you might puke again its for the better. Thats for the too much liqour nights which was this weekend for me.

Other then that if you dont puke its all good after the 2L of water before bed. Nothing works better.
