What did you do to start out freelancing?

So, I think I got the skills as both a programmer and artist to start freelancing in web design. I've been struggling on making my portfolio though. It's not the portfolio website itself, it's the contents inside. I can't get any work, because I don't have any examples, but I also don't know what to create to fill my portfolio. What did you do in my situation? Did you just create 'fake' websites? I just can't figure out what I want to do! Help me please!

When I started out as a freelancer back in 2005 I had only one skill, good English. Now that strength has gone on to make me a rich person and capable of living by my self. I started with forum posting and now I have 10 sites on 1st page for very competitive keywords giving me good revenue. And side by side I provide different services to people to gain trust and build on sources and friends.

 

It sounds like you are a SEO expert. I don't think forum posting will get me anywhere as a freelancer, but who knows. Maybe someone reading this will be like "hey, I need a website!".

 

That's not helping. I'm asking what I can make to put in my portfolio. I'm tired building "fake" websites that pretty much serve no purpose other than to be something to add to my portfolio. I throw those ones away, because they don't show my full potential. After all, you are your most difficult client.

 

Before creating portfolio's first get some jobs to be done, you can do some jobs for free or at very cheaper price and before submitting the project you have to get permission from the work provider, that you will be publishing it in your portfolio. Then you would some projects, finish it up then you got something to add up to your portfolio site. Don't add fake contents, it won't be good for freelancer.. first you need to show yourself as a honest and trustable guy.

Sounds like that's my best bet! I'm new to the forum and the business section is pretty scattered. Is there a specific place I can post a "looking for work" thread or even a place I can look for people needing help? I see they have a place for design help, but not so much entire website help (seeing as how I'm a coder and designer).

There are Many Web design conferences, and other opportunities where you can have your skills in science. The legend with a wealth of information to share-free some resources, some for money. The important thing is, it's time to develop your skills to continue to learn and to share what you learn with others.
