I believe it could - IF done correctly. When advertising on social media sites like orkut, your greatest benefit will be in the pin point targeting you're able to do.
Social media sites contain millions of profiles - those millions of profiles have TONS personal information about each individual who owns the profile.
Information such as:

Place of employment
Relationship status
A person's likes and interests

If done correctly, this is way more powerful than coming up with a list of keywords for traditional seach engine ads.

Facebook is the best especilly with a facebook fan page and ads. Google ppc is too expensive now a days. Youtube i heard is also good. Twitter is good but takes much more time to figure it out.
