Wait a minute... Isn't Moby Dick a whale? What does Malacca have to do with Moby Dick?
In his book Moby Dick, Chapter 87: The Grand Armada., author Herman Melville talks about sailing out in Asia and mentions Malacca and Malays.

The Malacca Straits was probably once a busy sailing route between Europe and Asia...
Hence, I think the author wanted to "mention" that..
BTW, it also mentioned Java and Sumatra...

Yep, Melaka (formerly Malacca because the British and Americans spelled/spelt and pronounced it wrong) is a state in Malaysia.
The location of Malacca was crucial to trade way back in 1600s till recently, but with the advent of modernization things are different around here now.

The article talks about Java and Sumatra too, both of which are in Indonesia.
