What happens if a Registrar goes bankrupt? Hmm..

Hi, I was thinking the other day, you know the more domains you have the more worried you start getting. 1st of all ok dont put all egss in one basket. But even if I were to have 10 baskets I wouldnt want to loose one. :)

So if one of my registrars goes under, bankrupt. What happens? Where do the domains go.? I know they are registered under my name with the ICANN or whatever but how would I get control to manage them?

    Just for future referance.

    Thanx

Thats why I only buy from HUGE registrars like Godaddy, a lot of those fly-by-night jobbers are just asking for troubles.

I've actually had it happen once a few years ago 'well not sure on bankrupt, but they were there one day and then gone the next' but I forget exactly how that played out? Think they gave me time to move, can't honestly remember the specifics.

Ouch, so if the dissapear before you move you cant get a hold of your domains? Or is it possible but ALOT of hassle?

Ive been with this domain registrar for a year now but Im kinda worried of their future. I have looked in to them a little and they say they was started in 2000 .... etc. Price good, £4.95 Service super fast, + domain forwarding and email forwarding inc.

The only problem is that I have never heard anyone talk about them in any form. I did a search on google and none.

The more domains you buy the more worried you get, especially if the domains you buy are nice ones.

Oh the place im with now is www.wiserdomains.co.uk Anyone? :-s

What do you prefer I switch to? I mean I looked at godaddy but blah they have the worst site ever too complicated, 1&1 only do that $5.95 thing for US residents and like £8 for UK so thats too expensice. Directi too expensive. etc.... I looked in to alot of em, I couldnt find a proper one where its cheap but also good service like the guys Im with now.

Anyway sorry for chatting so much.

    Thanx 4 the replies.

If they have the worst site, why are they the most populer? Maybe because they don't have the worst site.

There are many big registars that would never go bankrupt... godaddy, enom, dotster, namecheap... you have enough options, why stick to some uinkown crappy registar that may dissapear tomorrow?

lOl Nintendo, not like I cussed em or anything just dont like how their site is, way too mixed up offering all kinds of stuff, just want an easy to use site, where there arent 192394875239485 options on the page and you cant find nothn. You been usen em for a while so u probably used to them, ive just hear wat too many complaints bout them thats all :)

Fryman, enom 29 dollars, unless I get a reseller account which is like 200 dollars, I know u can buy domains with that money for 6.95 but I cant give away 200 dollars at one go, not that wealthy :(

namecheap: I heard they very good, but dont get me wrong are resellers good to go with, just read a whole bunch of posts lately and for some reason alot of people prefer to go with ICANN credited places, another reason why I want to leave my current place. A reseller. :-s

Id appreciate all help put in to this topic as probably alot of people have the same q's I do and would love to share the experiece you guys have receved in the past, ya learn something everyday thats the beauty of life. :)

It's da web hosting that generates a ton of complaints!!! Yes, don't use them for hosting!!!!!! Heck, once they banned Google from crawling the sites they hosted and caused a war!!!!!

 Nintendo is actually right!

:D but it's true - GoDaddy the registrar and GoDaddy the host are two different things.

Transfer the domains you're worried about to someone a little bigger, like GoDaddy. I think they'll do it for about 5.95 which includes a 1 year extension on your registration period.
