What is a WEBMASTER?

This term Webmaster is a funny one, seems that we all call ourselves "WEBMASTERS" but what is a webmaster

Is there a difference between a webmaster and a programmer/coder

Can someone that does not know how to code be considered a webmaster

What do you think a true webmasters qualifications should be, does a webmaster have to have a computer science degree and understand all programming languages to be considered a webmaster?

Does he or she have to be a graphic design expert to be considered a webmaster?

Can you call yourself a webmaster if a major company does not consider you good enough to qualify for the job?

Does a webmaster have to be an expert on search engines and internet marketing?

I guess webmaster is the person in charge of a site. I am the webmaster of my sites, and have no idea about programming and coding. I hire someone to do that for me, what I do is update my site, answer emails and make sure everything is working fine.

Maybe that is why I keep asking you to build some sites with me

Josh if you read the jobs classified ads as I do you will find that most major companies require degrees and experience with programming languages in addition to know how when it comes to specific software programs before they consider you for a position as webmaster.

There are several mailboxes that every domain should maintain: webmaster, postmaster, hostmaster, abuse, noc, etc (all names are listed in the RFC 2142). So, webmaster's the first line of support when it comes to website business; in case of a small company, often the only one :)

    cool post Josh.....

It seems like a great definetion....

All of the above are required to "manage" an internet property....

So in short - I definetly agree with that definition.....

Too dumb to go to college and get a degree, I never finished HS, 1/2 credit short, flunked a 2 week summer school class that would have got it done but I did not want to do homework

I try to think of "Webmaster" by looking at the word or "words" themselves.

    "web" and "master"

When I think of "webmaster" I think not of someone who specifically and only codes, html, php, c or anything for that matter. I think of someone who has "mastered" the "web", a "WebMaster".

So ultimately "webmaster" can fit a wide variety of skills, jobs, and tasks. A web designer can be considered a web master, a coder can be considered a webmaster, SEO types, again, webmaster... Graphic Designers, assuming their work is web related, yeap, webmaster.

So again, I think a webmaster is someone that has mastered the web in one way are another. So this begs the question, can a simple surfer be a webmaster? I'd draw the line there. I think that someone who has mastered the web in one form or another through some form of "web development" is a WebMaster!

Anyway, that was an ear full.

    Yes.

    1. You can be the webmaster of a plain HTML site with no real coding involved. Heck, you could build your entire site in Microsoft FrontPage.
    2. You can be a programmer without running a web site.

Yes, for the reason listed above.

I believe that knowledge of the OS (Unix, Windows, etc...) and web server (Apache, etc...) are much more important skills for a webmaster than programming languages.

Comp. Sci. degrees... only useful for job hunting.

No. Some web pages don't even use graphics.

And, even for those that do, graphics can be purchased online.

Also, in larger organizations, there is a seperate graphics person or graphics department.

Yes. I do not care what other people think.

I am not sure that anyone really qualifies as an expert on those topics.

You can be a webmaster with no SEO skills. Many companies use in-house webmasters and then outsource SEO. Other companies do not drive traffic to their web sites, so they don't bother with SEO at all.
