I suggest you, just follow the guideline of that particular social networking site & just do that, you will get good result from their. If you are using social networking website for your referral traffic, you have to live with him very friendly, according to his rules & regulation otherwise they will kicked you out...

I'm pretty new to the forum (obviously) and trying to get some new ideas for my old ways of affiliate marketing, so hopefully Im not posting in the wrong place. Are you guys using this for selling your own products, or for affiliate stuff? So would/could I create a fanpage on FB (or whatever) for my redirect site?

you can use google adwords to gain traffic to your website and there are many other ways, try advertising on digital point forums.
