    I keep seeing the name "Microsoft SharePoint" appear on advertisements on the side whenever I do research on business related stuff on the internet. What is this software or service for?

    It is one of their collaboration software pieces. You might check out Microsoft SharePoint Products and Technology for some information. Some web developers use it to just create websites but it can do a lot more. If you just need to build a website, Expression Web, baby brother to SharePoint, is a much better way to go.
