    Basically users bookmarking sites / pages that they like and other users being able to see which sites are more popular than others.
    Think of it as a human opinion powered website directory with up-to-the minute updates on what's popular in the world at the moment.
    One of the most popular examples is del.icio.us

    there are mich more bookamrking sites out there but you can start with these...

    and be careful at digg. If they can see you're just always promoting your pages and not really looking over the network, they could ban you... too much submissions of pages belonging to one site only can also get you banned, I hear.

    I like delicious since it convinetly is added to your browser and blends in with the other icons. I only signed up with it so I could get a higher ranking on SEOmoz, but other than that I really have no interest in social bookmarking. I submit a few articles to Digg and they always get a handful of Diggs but immediately get buried from top stories from around the World.

    When a person bookmarks an Internet resource (most commonly a website) so that other members of the social bookmark network can view the resource, it is termed social bookmarking.

    Social bookmarking has two main advantages.

    1. It provides you with backlinks to your website
    2. Since other members can see your bookmarks you can get free traffic to your website.

    bookmarking for the society...i.e. sharing our own bookmarks....so that everybody can view them and rate them too....and save them....similarily highly bookmarked urls would be preffered if we search for links....
