Well the easiest to learn is Photoshop, but try and start with Illustrator as that is the better choice for Logo Design and other things as it produces Vector images and not Bitmap like Photoshop.

Adobe products like Photoshop, Illustrator, Fireworks are the best, and the whole industry is using them.
And if you are short of funds and can't afford it then go for Gimp, its a good alternative.

    Pen and paper.

Just because you know how to use the software doesnt mean you're learning anything about design or that you're going to be good at design. You're not going to learn basic design elements from a program alone.

Find a few design books and sketch (A LOT).

Adobe photoshop for the general layout of the site, if you want to get fancy start getting used to inDesign/Illustrator but you'll end up publishing a site in Photoshop.

Use Adobe Photoshop if you want to learn image manipulation or any design with image base. Use Adobe Illustrator for design with vector base. If you want to learn make logo design, Adobe illustrator is the best choice, its vector base, so you will get best result in image resolution, no matter how big you will blow up you design result, the resolution quality still good.

actually photoshop is the best in the business but learning it won't be easy thou you will have lots of time to grasp things in a hard way. the first time i've used photoshop it took me months to actually grasp the whole concept of it.

Best softwares to learn are none other PhotoShop in its latest CS4 version and also in Vector Illustration Adobe Illustrator now in its Cs4 version. Also Consider Corel Draw X4. There are several basic free multimedia applications like Inkscape.

I agree with Mmsupermario. The software is just a tool to make designing easier. Try reading a few tutorials and books about design basics.

imo, just go with photoshop. join a sig forum and start there. at least that's what i did and everything i learned was essentially self taught with the help of my peers. you'll naturally pick up on things and progress away from sigs and start producing some quality stuff.

When I started doing graphic design it was the cost of the program that hindered me. I found a "open source" software (meaning u get program for free) named GIMP 2.6. I actually learned to do all of my designing there before anything else.

One of the best programs to start with is but of course Photoshop, though i'd suggest that you have a look at some video tutorials from Youtube etc, this'll help you learn the curve of the software in no time =D

Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and inDesign. Are all very good. Some use Corel Draw also.
