Depends on whether you're lokking for corporate of free software, If you can afford it, then illistrator is by far the best. But if you want a free alternative, GIMP is probably your best bet

photoshop for sure. gather your ideas from different sources, web, scans sketches, all into photoshop, then make your logo.

Vector Magic can be used to convert to vector if you need it. But photoshop can handle massive 5000x5000 + files so unless your printing billboards in las vegas then your good to go!

Totally Agree!! Photoshop is by far the best program for logo design, illustrator is fine for vector logos but like freebanner has explained photoshop can deal with massive file sizes so they can be re-sized to what you want providing the quality is there.

Photoshop and Illustrator or Corel cannot be compared, eventually Corel and Illustrator because this are vectorial software, Photoshop is graphical. So take note.

Corel for more technical user, because based on cad.
if you have more artistical in mind,... go for illustrator.
    both are vector based
Photoshop is pixeled, more compatible for photo editing. or painting :)

hope that help to choose the right tools.

Thank goodness this guy is banned :)

Photoshop can handle paths which can expand as large as you like! I've been using photoshop for my logos for a good year and a half now and its worked perfectly. I've tried illustrator before but I just find that everything takes longer.

Like I said, photoshop can do paths which can be expanded as large as you like, and with photoshop you can add better 'blending options' and I feel there is much more controlled allowed. Also, photoshop paths can be exported into illustrator anyway, so it's all good :).
