    A broken link pretty much means a link that doesn't lead anywhere.

    if you have too many broken links Google will penalizes you, that will affect SERPs.

    Just think of it, who would like to click a given link then only to find out that it is a 404 page? Nobody, right? And so with Google. It is always better to review your links and make sure that all of them are working. This way, You can't get your site penalize by big search engines like Google.
