    You can imagine a channel panel is like an ocean and the three fundamental color Red Green and Blue as three rivers. Composing of the three rivers will create an image(ocean) with the adjusted level of Luminance. In photoshop you will have three level Red which technically define more highlight are but less shadow area in the image (it varies image to image ), green defines same amount of shadow and highlight (it varies image to image ) and Blue defines less highlight and more shadow(it varies image to image ) .In other words we could say the contrast show less in Red, than Green than Blue.
    There is another channel its call alpha channel which it controls the visibility of the image . Channel is great to select an image, it helps to select every details in the image .
