These kind of services work on the principle of shortening the URLs into something that fits into micro blogging and other platforms and most of these urls don't make sense at all if you look at them. So do provide you the option to write your own urls however it is better to have the original URL than shorten them.

Advantage of the URLs is that you get all sorts of stats associated with the URL.

SEO point of view there is not use in tiny url.
some of the website are restricted to take long urls, and what some seo guys thing is they shorten the URL using these services and simply submit these urls.

It's main use for me has been with Twitter. You're only given 140 characters for each Tweet, and some URL's can be very lengthy, so having a tiny url is very helpful when it comes to posting links on Twitter.

I like using them to surprise my friends on Facebook, so they don't know what the site is until it opens. I'm sure you could use the same thinking for more useful purposes though. :)

It is useful if you want your visitors to click on the link without them knowing where they're going.

TinyURL is handy when you have a character limit on the service you're posting to. It can save you lots of characters to put into your message. Some of the other URL shorteners also offer metrics - so you can see how many people clicked the shortened link, and which services they clicked it from. That may be no use if you already have analytics on the domain, but if you're posting affiliate links it might help to be able to see how effective your marketing is.

i guess its best to avoid such shortening service as much as possible. Use your own domain and make it popular!

TinyURL is a web service that provides short aliases for redirection of long URL's.
As these short URL doesnt make any sense they can be linked to malicious sites too.

-if your URL is very long (like if you have a server without a domain and you need to connect with the IP address)
    -microblogging (like twitter)
-sneaking in or hiding referral links

Why people use tinyurl or bit.ly urls :
    1. When someone reports your link as spam in Facebook, you are not allowed to post your link again. Hence, you have to use tiny urls.
    2. When the URL is extremely long and eats up characters. (as in twitter)
    3. When one wants to hide the URL for any other reason.

It makes your url smaller, and you can use a custom one. Or buy a cheap .info to use a redirect. Mainly for cloaking affiliate links.
